Scientific Name: Melaleuca alternifolia

Tea tree oil, also commonly known as Melaleuca oil, has been used for centuries by the Aborigine native peoples of Australia and later by the British settlers. Tea tree oil is quite mild and non-irritating.
Manuka essential oil is sometimes confused with Tea Tree. Manuka is not the same as Tea Tree essential oil, and is distilled from the Manuka New Zealand tree.
There are over 300 different species of tea tree that are native to Australia. Melaleuca alternifolia is regarded as one of the highest quality species. Tea tree oil is best made by steam distilling the leaves of the tree.
